This is a group of diseases that cause progressive weakness and loss of muscle mass. Abnormal genes (mutations) interfere with the production of proteins needed to form healthy muscle. There is no cure for muscle dystrophy, but medications and therapy can help manage symptoms and slow the course of the disease. There are more than sixty rare and exceedingly rare progressive muscle-weakening and wasting conditions, affecting just over one in every 1,000 people and affecting about 70,000 people in the UK.
